And there came my second digital painting assignment. While I only had to draw and paint one specific composition for my previous assignment, it was now my time to come up with an interesting composition myself. And there was a different theme. In the picture, there had to be a medieval castle and it had to be surrounded by water, vegetation, rocks, a cloudy sky and extra structures was a free choice.

It was important the rule of thirds was applied to the composition along with other strict specifications like leading lines, overlap, atmospheric perspective, strong contrast in values and colour.

What came on top of thinking of a suiting composition, is that I had to try different colour moods on my work. I made multiple fast colour studies to get a feel of what a mood looks like and how to apply it to my own painting. I ended up using a sunny day with blue skies and green grass and vegetation. When I chose my mood, final details were added to the final image. It was another challenging assigment, but a fun one too.
